Although little known, Alberta’s $15 per tonne carbon tax is very popular among Albertans according to a recent ThinkHQ Public Affairs survey.

The poll, conducted in mid-April, reveals that fewer than 1/3 of Albertans (31%) are aware that Alberta currently has a levy on CO2 for large industrial emitters, with only 6% able to correctly recall the $15 per tonne charge.

That said, when provided with the scope and intent of Alberta’s current $15 per tonne carbon tax, Albertans are overwhelmingly positive.  Nearly three-quarters (73%) offer support for the charge (with 32% citing “strong approval”) compared fewer than one-fifth (17%) who offer any degree of opposition to Alberta’s current carbon levy.

According to Albertans, the most positive impacts of the existing levy relate to its opportunity for developing greener energy technologies (69% positive), encouraging companies to cut their GHG emissions (62%) and enhancing Alberta’s environmental reputation across Canada and globally (61%).

Survey respondents are less enthusiastic, although still more positive than negative, about the impact of Alberta’s carbon tax regime on the competitiveness of industry and employment in the province.

Meanwhile, nearly ½ (48%) say Alberta’s existing CO2 levy has a negative impact on the price consumers pay for fuel and other products.

Methodology

From April 16 – 20, 2013 ThinkHQ Public Affairs Inc. conducted an independent online survey among 1185 randomly selected Alberta residents who are members of The Voice of Alberta Research Panel.  The margin of error – which measures sampling variability – is +/- 2.9%, 19 times out of 20.  The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current gender, age and region Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Alberta.
