Alberta Big City Mayors Riding High

Provincial politics in Alberta may be chaotic these days, but municipal politicians in the province’s biggest cities are riding a wave of popularity.  Excerpts from our March 2014 edition of the Eye on Alberta reveal that Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, and their respective City Councils, enjoy the confidence of sizeable majorities in their cities.

  • After only 5 months in office, Edmonton’s new mayor, Don Iveson, is enjoying a strong honeymoon with Edmonton voters.  Fully 70% approve of his performance since being elected in October, compared to only 14% offering any degree of disapproval.
  • Edmonton City Council as a whole also garners strong approval today: 58% of those interviewed approve of Council overall, while 18% disapprove.

  • Calgary’s second-term mayor, Naheed Nenshi, continues to enjoy high approval among voters.  71% of those interviewed say they approve of Nenshi’s performance as mayor, compared to 23% who currently disapprove.
  • Six-in-ten voters give a positive nod to Calgary City Council, while just over one-quarter (26%) disapprove of Council’s performance in office.
